WINNIPEG -- Manitoba's Opposition Tories have voted against a bill that=20
would allow same-sex couples to adopt children.

Justice Minister Gord Mackintosh accused the Opposition of ``flipping and=20
flopping like a bass in a boat'' when it comes to supporting gay adoptions.

Bill 34, the Charter Compliance Act, will now return to the house for third=
=20
and final reading.

The Conservatives voted against the proposed legislation following a public=
=20
committee hearing Wednesday night, but were outnumbered by New Democrats.

Tory justice critic Joy Smith says her party has nothing against same-sex=20
couples adopting children.

But Smith says the proposed legislation has too many unanswered questions,=
=20
such as if there are any safeguards to protect children from being adopted=
=20
by felons.
